In short

If you live in Prince Edward Island and your credit is poor, you can still apply. 911cash sends one application to lenders in our network, which typically offer $300 to $3,000 over 90 to 120 days at 22% to 32% APR. Under PEI's Consumer Protection Act, lenders must state the cost as an annual percentage rate and can't charge you for repaying early. A PEI payday loan can cost $14 per $100, which is $70 on a $500 loan, all due on payday.

Getting an installment loan in Prince Edward Island, step by step

  1. Apply once. The 911cash application takes about five minutes on a phone or computer, from anywhere in Prince Edward Island.
  2. A lender reviews it. We pass your application to lenders in our network. One that can help contacts you and asks you to complete Instant Banking Verification, a read-only look at your recent transactions. There are no documents to upload.
  3. Read the contract. The lender shows you the rate, every fee and the total you'll repay before you agree to anything.
  4. Get the money. Funds are deposited once you sign, often the same day.

911cash is not a lender. The lender that approves you sets the rate, fees and payment dates.

Installment loan rules in PEI

Unlike BC and Manitoba, PEI has no separate licensing system for high-cost installment lenders. The Consumer Protection Act covers installment loans instead, and it gives you these rights:

  • The lender has to give you a separate statement with the annual percentage rate for your cost of borrowing.
  • Paying the loan off ahead of its due date can't trigger a fee or penalty.

Every installment loan is subject to the federal 35% APR limit, and that limit includes fees.

What PEI law says about payday loans

  • These rules apply to loans of $1,500 or less with terms of 62 days or less. The cost can't exceed $14 per $100 advanced.
  • Within two business days, you can cancel without needing to give a reason.
  • Payday loans can't be extended. After you pay one off, a lender has to wait seven days before giving you another.
  • Repaying the full balance is allowed at any time with no penalty. Lenders also can't take an assignment of your wages.
  • When a lender breaks certain rules, you owe only the amount you borrowed and not the cost of borrowing. You have a year to ask for a refund of illegal charges.
  • All payday lenders need a licence. Each agreement has to include a warning that a payday loan's cost may be much higher than other borrowing.

Who can apply

  • 18 or older
  • A full-time job or steady self-employed income
  • Not in bankruptcy
  • A Canadian citizen
  • An online bank account you can verify

Lenders look mostly at your income and recent banking, so a low credit score alone doesn't rule you out. You can apply from Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Cornwall, Montague, Kensington and Souris, or anywhere else in Prince Edward Island. Applying doesn't commit you; you only agree to a loan when you sign a lender's contract.

Checking a lender

The Registrar in PEI's Department of Justice and Public Safety licenses payday lenders. Call Consumer Services at 1-800-658-1799 to confirm a lender's licence, learn about your rights or file a complaint.

Free help with debt

If you'd be borrowing to keep up with other debts, a non-profit credit counsellor can build a budget with you and may arrange lower payments with your creditors.

  • Accredited non-profit credit counsellors who serve PEI residents are listed by Credit Counselling Canada.
  • Before picking a counsellor, ask what they charge. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says reputable credit counselling agencies don't charge for a first meeting.
